Blending Individual Therapy into the Couples Therapy Framework: Integrating EFIT and EFCT

    Hosted by: HCEFT

Many couples therapists encounter moments when individual wounds, trauma histories, and deeply held emotional injuries emerge within the relational process. While Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) provides a powerful roadmap for creating secure bonds between partners, therapists often wonder how to effectively address individual attachment injuries without losing sight of the couple relationship.

In this presentation, Brittany Burch, LCSW-S, CGP, will provide an introduction to Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) and explore how EFIT interventions can be thoughtfully integrated into the EFT couples therapy framework. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how individual emotional processing and attachment-based trauma work can enhance and strengthen the couple therapy process.

Through discussion, clinical examples, and practical applications, attendees will learn how to identify and work with intrapsychic wounds that contribute to relationship distress while maintaining an attachment-focused lens. Special attention will be given to the role of trauma processing within EFT and how individual healing can foster greater accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement between partners.

    What You'll Gain:

    1. An understanding of three key principles and interventions of Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT).
    2. Practical strategies for integrating EFIT interventions within the EFCT model.
    3. A clearer understanding of how trauma-focused EFIT work can support attachment repair and relationship healing within couples therapy.

This workshop is ideal for therapists who are familiar with EFT and are interested in expanding their ability to navigate the intersection of individual attachment wounds and couple relationship dynamics. Participants will leave with a more integrated framework for supporting both individual healing and relational transformation.

Stage 2 Antidote Events: Seeding Attachment and Choreographing Enactments
Presented by Ting Liu, Ph.D., ICEEFT Trainer & Supervisor, AAMFT Approved Supervisor

Many EFT therapists can help couples begin to de-escalate their negative cycle, but then feel less certain about how to move into Stage 2 work. What does it look like to help partners reach, respond, and risk from a more vulnerable place when the old protective patterns are still close by?

This 3-hour clinical training will focus on the pivotal shift from Stage 1 de-escalation to Stage 2 restructuring of the emotional bond. Dr. Ting Liu will help participants think more clearly about “antidote events”: moments in session where partners begin to access, share, and respond to attachment needs in ways that support secure connection.

The training will focus on two foundational Stage 2 interventions: seeding attachment and choreographing enactments. Participants will learn how to make implicit attachment longings more explicit, introduce attachment language into the clinical dialogue, and guide partners from talking about their pain to reaching toward each other from core vulnerability.

This workshop is especially suited for therapists who are trained in EFT (have foundational EFT knowledge and experience), are working with couples, can help partners de-escalate the cycle, and want more clarity and confidence in Stage 2 EFT work.

    Participants will learn to:

    • Identify the attachment “antidotes” each partner may need to move from rigid defensive patterns toward more secure connection.
    • Use seeding attachment to help implicit, protective longings become more explicit and accessible in session.
    • Choreograph enactments that help partners speak to each other from core vulnerability rather than only talking about the relationship.
    • Support reaching, responding, and mutual risking as part of restructuring the couple’s bond.

    Recommended prior EFT experience

This training is intended for clinicians who have completed an EFT Externship. Core Skills training is preferred.
